Nasi Goreng’s origin is traced back to the Southern Chinese fried rice. Fried rice is a way to avoid wasting rice, therefore, Nasi Goreng is traditionally served for breakfast and is made with leftover rice and chicken or beef from the night before. The basic ingredients include rice, salt, pepper, shallot, garlic, tomato ketchup, and sambal (or chili sauce). This dish is popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Netherlands. If you add a fried egg to it, it is then called Nasi Goreng Spesial which means special fried rice topped with a fried egg.
