Nasi Kuning, or sometimes called Nasi Kunyit, is a common Indonesian yellow rice dish served with a variety of side dishes during the nation's celebrative festivals, holidays, or special occasions - especially in the Island of Java. Nasi Kuning looks like a pile of gold, therefore it is often served at parties and opening ceremonies as a symbol of good fortune, wealth and dignity. It is cooked in turmeric with coconut milk. Some side dishes that is is served with includes shredded omelet, serundeng (relish of grated coconut and spices), teri kacang (fried anchovy and peanuts), urap (vegetable in shredded coconut dressing), ayam goreng (Javanese-style fried chicken), sambal goreng (fried tempeh and potato caramelized in spicy sauce), balado udang (shrimp in chilli), or perkedel (potato fritters). It is also common to serve it with kerupuk udang which are shrimp crackers.
